Santa Clara, Calif. April 3, 2012 — Kilopass Technology Inc., a leading provider of semiconductor logic non-volatile memory (NVM) intellectual property (IP), today announced that its XPM (eXtra Permanent Memory) IP is integrated into a Set-Top Box (STB) SoC being designed by SICMICRO (Chongqing Silian Microelectronics Co., Ltd.) based in Beijing Zhongguancun Science Park, China. Because the memory will contain encryption key storage, the failure of passive, semi-invasive, and invasive tampering methods to hack XPM NVM IP contributed to winning the design. The ability to securely reprogram the memory in the field to enable, change, or rescind encryption keys was also a factor.

Due to the nature of the technology, it is difficult to determine the content of the memory. Passive techniques such as using current profiles to determine the word pattern are unsuccessful because the bitcell current for “0”s and “1”s are much smaller than the current required for sensing or to operate the peripheral circuits in order to read the memory. One cannot determine the pattern of the word being read. Invasive techniques such as backside attacks or scanning electron microscope (SEM) passive voltage contrast are unsuccessful because it is very difficult to isolate the bitcell since it is connected in a cross point array.
